Broom Evolution

This is the latest version of broomstick that i bought from an Indian grocery store in Bay area. It was well packed and i could not see the details much before getting it home . After unpacking i could not stop myself vowing to write up the story of broom revolution. This broom stick is made with plastic which is  easy to use and less maintenance but as usual not environment friendly. I am born and brought up in eastern India and broom comes with lots of prejudice and restrictions . Like i remember that how our old maid used to complain my mom that she needs a new broom and my mom and grandmother used to push her back citing days , months restrictions - 😀 . Are you laughing but this is true 😄!

Above picture is different versions of jharu / jhata ( localized string for broom stick in India ) i grew up with. Each of them has different purpose and none of them suppose to interfere with each other's responsibilities - like some will be used to clean house , some will be use for outdoor cleaning and some will be for bathroom and some will be to clean the drainage system inside the house . It was mostly made with coconut sticks or bamboo sticks materials and used to shred a lot before it became steady with its purpose. If you remember that the broom that was touched by janitor was not supposed to touched by anyone. But i remember my grandmother used to not to follow those prejudice very strictly. She was the follower of "Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness". She was always ahead of her time.

Making this broom always used to be a local handcraft industry back in 1990s but after seeing this broom i realize that with industrialization what happened with those local craft may not be well known. But despite of this new revolution i would like to wait and watch this new broom journey vs my older broom because  of this old saying "a new broom sweeps clean, but an old broom knows the corners."

See you soon
