Durga pujo in West Bengal

Today is "mahashahti"-that is today is the 6th day during the nabaratri. In Bengal from today basically the pujo starts. We call is "durga pujo",it means homecoming, family get together. In Bengal we have a mythology that during the durga pujo Devi durga comes to her father's place to spend 4 days with her parents. She comes along with all her 4 children-Kartik,Ganesha,Laxmi,Saraswati.Her husband "mahadeb" is too busy to visit his in-laws place.Till today there is a ritual that daughter's have to visit their parents place during the pujo.In Bengal the food plays a major role in this festival. You will find awesome sweet dish and fish during these days. You need to get some new cloths for all your family members according to individual's capacity. All the younger get ready with their new cloths. I remember in my childhood i used to wait for this pujo because of new dress and "narkol naru" [coconut laddu],in the very morning we used to had bath and visit the Debi along with my grandma.
Now,the table has turned around !
This durga pujo was started by Ramchandra and it is know as "okal bodhon".From "mahalaya" it starts with "chandi path" and ultimately it ends on Dashami when maa durga went back to her husband's place. Each year while immersing the idol in Ganga river all of us pray her to come early next year.
Food, masti, fun and "adda" with all these the pujo become the source of energy for rest of the year.
If you will see the history the pujo in Bengal become very prominent during the British ruling period in India. At that time all the "jamindars" used to have a pujo and it used to be a competition of wealth and power. Once the Kolkata city was formed then pujo was confined as a family business where all the neighbours used to participate, later it took the shape of "sharbojonin" [pujo performed by committee] pujo. Now also durga pujo is celebrated locality wise. Apart from common pujo the individuals family also continue their pujo.
